Beinn Bhreac [Blair Atholl]

This is the height of the mountain above sea level. However, on the climb, it is the ascent that matters, i.e. the sum of all the uphill parts of the route.

This is the standard notation used on Ordnance Survey Landranger maps.

Each reference consists of two letters identifying a 100,000 metre square block then three digits defining the Easting and finally the three digits defining the Northing with reference to the South West corner of the block.

NN166712 is the grid reference for the summit of Ben Nevis. Where you are given the map number ( For Ben Nevis = 41) it is acceptable to omit the two initial letters e.g. 166712. (Instructions on how to read the references are given on the OS maps).

Mountain names are usually in Gaelic, the native language of the Scottish Highlands, or have been derived from the old Scots and Norse languages. We give the most commonly accepted meaning, but accept that some of these are disputed.

The UK is covered by 204 Ordnance Survey Landranger 1:50,000 scale maps. Maps numbered 1 to 86 cover Scotland but for the highest mountains (Munros) only 23 maps are required. The name given roughly describes the area covered by the map.

  Description
Beinn Bhreac is a remote peak lying to the N of Beinn Dearg (Munro). Given the long route in, you may wish climb both hills together, particularly as the corrie between them has an altitude of 680m.

Beinn Bhreac is a small conical peak on high undulating moorland. Due to its remote location careful navigation is required.

General Considerations
 Temperature decreases by 1degree C for every 100m of ascent.
 Wind usually increases with altitude.
 Visibility can change markedly with cloud level.
 River/Stream levels can increase markedly in one day.

If you go on foot from the Old Bridge of Tilt car park you can do a long but satisfying 2 corbett circuit which is marginally less distance than simply doubling back .Take the recommended route to the stalkers path beyond Bruar Lodge (8miles) and then the usual NE line to Beinn Bhreac. Select the best line (Don't build your hopes up!) to the hare infested summit of Carn a Chiaraidh which leads easily to Beinn Mheadhonach's summit. Follow the stalkers path down into the pastoral spleandour of Gleann Mhairc and followed by a long but picturesque tramp down Glen Tilt to the carpark. 23miles

With a cycle, this Corbett is not nearly as remote as one would imagine. Cycled in from Calvine past Bruar Lodge on a track which was well surfaced, although rough patchings in places. Dropped the bike at the start of the stalkers' path which meant that my total journey for the day consisted of 28k by bike, and just 14.3k on foot, albeit some of it is pretty arduous through the peat-hags once the top of the stalkers path is reached.

Approached on the track from Old Bridge of Tilt. Walked from the bothy where you join the MM route at Bruar Lodge. Good stalkers path from the lodge but navigation looks like it would be a problem in poor visibility once it peters out. Easy ascent of the hill itself on short grass/heather and fantastic views from the summit.
