Creagan na Beinne

This is the height of the mountain above sea level. However, on the climb, it is the ascent that matters, i.e. the sum of all the uphill parts of the route.

This is the standard notation used on Ordnance Survey Landranger maps.

Each reference consists of two letters identifying a 100,000 metre square block then three digits defining the Easting and finally the three digits defining the Northing with reference to the South West corner of the block.

NN166712 is the grid reference for the summit of Ben Nevis. Where you are given the map number ( For Ben Nevis = 41) it is acceptable to omit the two initial letters e.g. 166712. (Instructions on how to read the references are given on the OS maps).

Mountain names are usually in Gaelic, the native language of the Scottish Highlands, or have been derived from the old Scots and Norse languages. We give the most commonly accepted meaning, but accept that some of these are disputed.

The UK is covered by 204 Ordnance Survey Landranger 1:50,000 scale maps. Maps numbered 1 to 86 cover Scotland but for the highest mountains (Munros) only 23 maps are required. The name given roughly describes the area covered by the map.

  Description
Creagan na Beinne is the most W top of the hill complex forming the N slopes of Glen Almond. Creagan na Beinne is elongated N-S with its N slopes curving W over Beinn Bhreac to Loch Tay and its S slopes curving E to Lechrea Hill in Glen Almond.

It's W slopes fall steeply to Gleann a' Chilleine where a path runs from Loch Tay to Glen Almond making this hill easily accessible from the N or the S.

The usual ascents are from Ardtalnaig via the stalkers path onto Beinn Bhreac or from Dunan on the southern slopes of Dunan Hill

Hazards you may encounter on Creagan na Beinne include
 Steep slopes on or near ascent routes.
 Crags near summit.
 
General Considerations
 Temperature decreases by 1degree C for every 100m of ascent.
 Wind usually increases with altitude.
 Visibility can change markedly with cloud level.
 River/Stream levels can increase markedly in one day.

Climbed on 25/4/11 with Paula. Began at Ardtalnaig - the estate were almost not going to allow us onto the hill as we had a dog with us and there were many lambs. We agreed to use a lead and keep her beside us, which was not a problem as she has never had any interest in sheep. The walk looked as though it should not have taken long, but did - straightforward though. Higher up we saw many hares. Came down fairly sharply (mind the electric fence) and took the road out through Ardtalnaig Glen. A day which saw me finally ticking off the last of my Region 1 Corbetts!

Walked in to Tullichglas, then east to gain summit ridge, south to cairn. Made mistake of heading N over boggy col to find the 'track' shown on the 1:25000 (path on 1:50000) is little more than a boggy stream in places. If climbing on it's own (ie without the Shee) would recommend up and down by the Tullichglass route.
