Auchnafree Hill

This is the height of the mountain above sea level. However, on the climb, it is the ascent that matters, i.e. the sum of all the uphill parts of the route.

This is the standard notation used on Ordnance Survey Landranger maps.

Each reference consists of two letters identifying a 100,000 metre square block then three digits defining the Easting and finally the three digits defining the Northing with reference to the South West corner of the block.

NN166712 is the grid reference for the summit of Ben Nevis. Where you are given the map number ( For Ben Nevis = 41) it is acceptable to omit the two initial letters e.g. 166712. (Instructions on how to read the references are given on the OS maps).

Mountain names are usually in Gaelic, the native language of the Scottish Highlands, or have been derived from the old Scots and Norse languages. We give the most commonly accepted meaning, but accept that some of these are disputed.

The UK is covered by 204 Ordnance Survey Landranger 1:50,000 scale maps. Maps numbered 1 to 86 cover Scotland but for the highest mountains (Munros) only 23 maps are required. The name given roughly describes the area covered by the map.

  Description
Auchnafree Hill is a complex combination of corries and ridges, bounded by Glen Almond to the N, Glen turret to the SW and the A822 road (Sma Glen) to the E and SE.

Auchnafree Hill lies near the W margin of the long summit ridge which runs from A'Chairidh in the W to Meall Tarsuinn (648m) in the E.

Several tracks lead onto this long ridge, but due to the complex nature of this hill you are recommended to ascend via the track from the dam at Loch Turret to the S or on the track from Auchnafree in Glen Almond onto Crom Chreag which lies to the N of Auchnafree Hill.

Hazards you may encounter on Auchnafree Hill include
 Relatively Remote Mountain navigate with care.
 Steep slopes on or near ascent routes.
 Crags on or near ascent routes.
 
General Considerations
 Temperature decreases by 1degree C for every 100m of ascent.
 Wind usually increases with altitude.
 Visibility can change markedly with cloud level.
 River/Stream levels can increase markedly in one day.

As of August 2017 the actual summit cairn seems to have been dismantled. The cairn 100m to the west marking the edge of the plateau remains and from here it is easy to see that the ground to the right is slightly higher. In Summer conditions you'll be able to see the scar where the old summit cairn was, but in Winter you'll just need to read the ground.

Climbed on 10/4/08 - an odd one this - snow was falling and lay all over the Loch Turret track. At the summit plateau I knew from my map that there was more than one cairn, and the small one that I could see from a larger one (through the cloud) was higher. A few paces north of the shorter one I discovered the fence posts, confirming that I had found the summit. On the descent, almost all traces of snow had vanished and the cloud lifted. Even the previously elusive Ben Chonzie made an appearance.

Did this in reverse to the plan here...This walk is quite pleasant as far as the summit of Choinneachan (787m) with good view from there...the traverse across between Auchnafree & this second top is a bit of a bog trot...I should have gone clockwise but decided on the stiffer & more interesting direct ascent...so the 2km across the moor for a lousy 2m increase in height was kind of a bummer !
