Waun Fach

English/Welsh

Quick Facts
This is the height of the mountain above sea level. However, on the climb, it is the ascent that matters, i.e. the sum of all the uphill parts of the route.
Altitude
811 m (2660 ft)

This is the standard notation used on Ordnance Survey Landranger maps.

Each reference consists of two letters identifying a 100,000 metre square block then three digits defining the Easting and finally the three digits defining the Northing with reference to the South West corner of the block.

NN166712 is the grid reference for the summit of Ben Nevis. Where you are given the map number ( For Ben Nevis = 41) it is acceptable to omit the two initial letters e.g. 166712. (Instructions on how to read the references are given on the OS maps).

Mountain names are usually in Gaelic, the native language of the Scottish Highlands, or have been derived from the old Scots and Norse languages. We give the most commonly accepted meaning, but accept that some of these are disputed.

The UK is covered by 204 Ordnance Survey Landranger 1:50,000 scale maps. Maps numbered 1 to 86 cover Scotland but for the highest mountains (Munros) only 23 maps are required. The name given roughly describes the area covered by the map.

 Description
Waun Fach (2500ft+) is the highest point of the Black Mountains in the Brecon Beacons (Wales), a dissected plateau between Hay-on-Wye to the N and Abergavenny to the S. Some 6 or more parallel streams run SSE cutting the plateau into parallel ridges and valleys. The northern and western edges of the plateau form an abrupt escarpment with the shapely top of Pen Rhos Dirion (713m) prominent when seen from the Wye Valley.

Waun Fach lies 4 km S of Pen Rhos Dirion on the western edge of the range. Waun Fach is a gently rounded top with a flat summit plateau 500m in diameter, and has 3 ridges each with a well-trodden path. The W ridge turns S to a col at 617m with a choice of paths W giving access from the A470 road; then continues S for 7 km with 4 tops ending at Pen Cerrig-calch (701m) above the village of Llanbedr. The SE ridge and path leads after 2 km to Pen y Gadair Fawr (800m) then continues SSE for 7 km to Crug Mawr (550m) from where the path descends also to Llanbedr. It would thus be possible to make a long circular ascent of Waun Fach from Llanbedr around the Grwyne Fechan valley.

The track on the NNW ridge follows the edge of the escarpment, turning NE after 3 km and gently rising to Pen Rhos Dirion now with crags to left. After a further 2 km is another shapely top, Twmpa (690m), before the track descends to the Gospel Pass (524m) and a minor road from Hay-on-Wye. This road gives access to the most scenic part of the Black Mountains and Waun Fach with minimal ascent and undulation, but it is necessary to return by the same route.

Hazards you may encounter on Waun Fach include
 Moorland Terrain, few distinct landmarks.
Crags on or near ascent routes.

General Considerations
Temperature decreases by 1degree C for every 100m of ascent.
 Wind usually increases with altitude.
Visibility can change markedly with cloud level.
River/Stream levels can increase markedly in one day.
