Blackcraig Hill

This is the height of the mountain above sea level. However, on the climb, it is the ascent that matters, i.e. the sum of all the uphill parts of the route.

This is the standard notation used on Ordnance Survey Landranger maps.

Each reference consists of two letters identifying a 100,000 metre square block then three digits defining the Easting and finally the three digits defining the Northing with reference to the South West corner of the block.

NN166712 is the grid reference for the summit of Ben Nevis. Where you are given the map number ( For Ben Nevis = 41) it is acceptable to omit the two initial letters e.g. 166712. (Instructions on how to read the references are given on the OS maps).

Mountain names are usually in Gaelic, the native language of the Scottish Highlands, or have been derived from the old Scots and Norse languages. We give the most commonly accepted meaning, but accept that some of these are disputed.
Meaning
 

The UK is covered by 204 Ordnance Survey Landranger 1:50,000 scale maps. Maps numbered 1 to 86 cover Scotland but for the highest mountains (Munros) only 23 maps are required. The name given roughly describes the area covered by the map.

  Description
Blackcraig Hill lies to the S of New Cumnock in E Ayrshire and rises on the E side of Glen Afton.

Unusually for hills in this area, it is craggy, particularly on the W side towards Glen Afton.

A track starting from Blackcraig in Glen Afton provides most convenient access.

Hazards you may encounter on Blackcraig Hill include
 Crags within 1km of summit.
 
General Considerations
 Temperature decreases by 1degree C for every 100m of ascent.
 Wind usually increases with altitude.
 Visibility can change markedly with cloud level.
 River/Stream levels can increase markedly in one day.

Thank you Blackcraig. You were such a pleasure to walk compared to last weekend's mudfest on Windlestraw. Didn't meet another soul for the duration and can't understand why this hill isn't more popular because it was perhaps the best I've had this year.

Drove in to Lorg to climb from the south. Walked up the damaged vehicle track to the bealach, and skirted round the NW of Meikledodd Hill, over the top of the Blacklorg Hill, and left my rucksack by the fence before the third and final pull up the south slope of Blackcraig. Hard to tell which is the real top. It's 50 yards south of the trigpoint, but not the cairn. There are three other cairns and the trigpoint! Back to the east of other route, picking up forestry road down to the Lorg Trail which ran west across to the car. A windy but clear day with temp 5 C. Some hail. Lots of windmills!

Climbed this one as a means of getting my hills legs back in working order after a break. Headed round the left side of the farm and followed the track round towards a (well named) area named Star Bog, then nearing Quintin Knowe I started uphill. The navigation is basically following a fence, but the summit plateau is very marshy and large wet areas need to be avoided. The trig point lies over another fence, which has a very hard-to-spot stile on it. There are three cairns to be passed by on the way to the summit. Great views of Windy Standard and Cairnsmore of Carsphairn.
