Ettrick Pen

This is the height of the mountain above sea level. However, on the climb, it is the ascent that matters, i.e. the sum of all the uphill parts of the route.

This is the standard notation used on Ordnance Survey Landranger maps.

Each reference consists of two letters identifying a 100,000 metre square block then three digits defining the Easting and finally the three digits defining the Northing with reference to the South West corner of the block.

NN166712 is the grid reference for the summit of Ben Nevis. Where you are given the map number ( For Ben Nevis = 41) it is acceptable to omit the two initial letters e.g. 166712. (Instructions on how to read the references are given on the OS maps).

Mountain names are usually in Gaelic, the native language of the Scottish Highlands, or have been derived from the old Scots and Norse languages. We give the most commonly accepted meaning, but accept that some of these are disputed.
Meaning
 

The UK is covered by 204 Ordnance Survey Landranger 1:50,000 scale maps. Maps numbered 1 to 86 cover Scotland but for the highest mountains (Munros) only 23 maps are required. The name given roughly describes the area covered by the map.

  Description
Ettrick Pen lies to the E of Moffat and is one of four Grahams in the Ettrick Hills.

Ettrick Pen along with Capel Fell and Croft Head lie within a few km of each other and the ascent of all three in a single outing is perfectly feasible.

The closest access is from the NE at the end of the public road alongside the Ettrick Water. Much of this road is also part of the Southern Upland Way.

 
General Considerations
 Temperature decreases by 1degree C for every 100m of ascent.
 Wind usually increases with altitude.
 Visibility can change markedly with cloud level.
 River/Stream levels can increase markedly in one day.

Ettrick Pen is the highest of 3 Grahams in the area.It is also the only one with a summit cairn.It is supposed to be an ancient cairn and it does look to be so is it could be doing with a tidy up! Approached for a distance at Salcoth fish farm off the A708.You can park to the right of the White cottage in the field but be sure not to obstruct anything as it is working Farm land.Sharply up the edge of the woods on to Broken Back Hill and took in Capel Fell.No Cairn.Stump of wood marks the top!Dropped to Wind Fell avoiding deep gorge.Large stone Sheep fold and up the zig zag path to the top of Croft Head.No cairn.Gate and styles mark the top.Dropped back to sheepfold and along Southern Upland way via Wind Fell Hopetown Craig.Cairns appearing everywhere now! Pull up sharply to Ettrick Pen with the fence taking the route to the top.Summit and great views all around Spot next target for this area.Under Saddle Yoke and Saddle yoke across the A708.Nice circuit and you bag 3 Grahams to.
