This is the height of the mountain above sea level. However, on the climb, it is the ascent that matters, i.e. the sum of all the uphill parts of the route.

This is the standard notation used on Ordnance Survey Landranger maps.

Each reference consists of two letters identifying a 100,000 metre square block then three digits defining the Easting and finally the three digits defining the Northing with reference to the South West corner of the block.

NN166712 is the grid reference for the summit of Ben Nevis. Where you are given the map number ( For Ben Nevis = 41) it is acceptable to omit the two initial letters e.g. 166712. (Instructions on how to read the references are given on the OS maps).

Mountain names are usually in Gaelic, the native language of the Scottish Highlands, or have been derived from the old Scots and Norse languages. We give the most commonly accepted meaning, but accept that some of these are disputed.
Meaning
 

The UK is covered by 204 Ordnance Survey Landranger 1:50,000 scale maps. Maps numbered 1 to 86 cover Scotland but for the highest mountains (Munros) only 23 maps are required. The name given roughly describes the area covered by the map.

  Description
Ballencleuch Law is one of the Lowther Hills situated to the W of the A74. It is the highest point in an area of sprawling high ground.

The end of the public road near Kirkhope at the S end of the Daer Reservoir provides closest access.

 
General Considerations
 Temperature decreases by 1degree C for every 100m of ascent.
 Wind usually increases with altitude.
 Visibility can change markedly with cloud level.
 River/Stream levels can increase markedly in one day.

If setting off from Durisdeer then a nice circuit of the Glen can had by ascending Ballencleuch Law via Durisdeer Rig , wandering out to Rodger Law and then descending west for just over 2Km to a small farm building. A 200m ascent takes you to Well Hill which gives good views of the Lowther Hills before a grassy walk out to the days best part; Black Hill ,whose southern ridge takes you back to Durisdeer. About 4-5hours

Interred in the new Durisdeer Cemetery are Ludovic Kennedy, the former broadcaster, and his wife, Moira Shearer, a former ballerina.

Well worth a detour to Durisdeer Church which combines a three aisle church with wonderful family pews and an amazing marble monument to Countess of Queensberry and Dover d 1709. This is the ducal parish church despite its distance from Drumlanrig House. Usually it is open. Check out the gracious public rooms adjoining the west of the church which almost dwarf the church itself. And the Roman Road which leads up the valley to the hill is a masterpiece of road engineering 2,000 years old, predating Hadrian's Wall.

The Lowthers and surrounding hills are impressive.High tops and deep valleys are the theme here with many circular walks available.
