Beinn Bhreac [Glen Douglas]

This is the height of the mountain above sea level. However, on the climb, it is the ascent that matters, i.e. the sum of all the uphill parts of the route.

This is the standard notation used on Ordnance Survey Landranger maps.

Each reference consists of two letters identifying a 100,000 metre square block then three digits defining the Easting and finally the three digits defining the Northing with reference to the South West corner of the block.

NN166712 is the grid reference for the summit of Ben Nevis. Where you are given the map number ( For Ben Nevis = 41) it is acceptable to omit the two initial letters e.g. 166712. (Instructions on how to read the references are given on the OS maps).

Mountain names are usually in Gaelic, the native language of the Scottish Highlands, or have been derived from the old Scots and Norse languages. We give the most commonly accepted meaning, but accept that some of these are disputed.

Speckled Hill

The UK is covered by 204 Ordnance Survey Landranger 1:50,000 scale maps. Maps numbered 1 to 86 cover Scotland but for the highest mountains (Munros) only 23 maps are required. The name given roughly describes the area covered by the map.

Description

Beinn Bhreac lies to the N of Glen Douglas and along with the Graham Tullich Hill is sandwiched between Loch Long to the W and Loch Lomond to the E.

It lies within close enough proximity to Tullich Hill to allow the two to be climbed in one outing.

General Considerations

Temperature decreases by 1degree C for every 100m of ascent.

Wind usually increases with altitude.

Visibility can change markedly with cloud level.

River/Stream levels can increase markedly in one day.

Gav Man's first hill of 2013! Steep going from start to finish. Impossible to enjoy any kind of view across Loch Lomond because of the thick cloud cover and mist but it was a straighforward route so there was little chance of losing the way.

Since my last visit 12 months ago the LL&TNP have added various signs indicating the Glen Douglas parking area and a new sign post plus a number of waymarks take you up the first part of the SW slopes of Beinn Bhreac near Invergroin. Once these end a grass hill track can be followed before the final trackless climb to the trig point which is a fantastic view point. Take in Ben Reoch and Tullich Hill if you have the time/energy.

Approached from Ben Reoch at Tarbet. This is a steep walk on grassy slopes. I wanted to know what was beyond the view from Tarbet Hotel. There are a few false summits behind the one seen from the Hotel. Nice views of Ben Narnain.A Chrois. The tree engulfed Cruich Tairbeirt and The Cobbler on the way up. Arrochar village soon come s in to view as does the main target of the day Beinn Breac.There is a broad well defined ridge all the way to this Graham but surprisingly no obvious path.Tulluch Hill is off the the West but it would mean a substantial drop in to Glen Dougals to include it in the circuit.Well worth it if you have the time which i didn`t.Views of Ben Lomond from here are simply superb well worth the trip alone.After a few boggy bits I was soon on the final steep ascent up to the trig pillar.The views down Loch Lomond from both angles are superb. A good day with some very rewarding views.

Parked up in Glen Douglas in a parking spot about 500m East of Invergroin. Walked passed Invergroin, over the bridge and then accessed the field over a broken gate and ascent Tullich Hill. From the summit descent NE into Ant Streang and then followed the fence line up to the summit of Ben Reoch. Then walked the ridge to Beinn Bhreac and then descent NW to the trees following the West side tree lin back to where I was parked. This was a nice loop and well worth taking in Ben Reoch when climbing these 2 Grahams.
