Meall Odhar

This is the height of the mountain above sea level. However, on the climb, it is the ascent that matters, i.e. the sum of all the uphill parts of the route.

This is the standard notation used on Ordnance Survey Landranger maps.

Each reference consists of two letters identifying a 100,000 metre square block then three digits defining the Easting and finally the three digits defining the Northing with reference to the South West corner of the block.

NN166712 is the grid reference for the summit of Ben Nevis. Where you are given the map number ( For Ben Nevis = 41) it is acceptable to omit the two initial letters e.g. 166712. (Instructions on how to read the references are given on the OS maps).

Mountain names are usually in Gaelic, the native language of the Scottish Highlands, or have been derived from the old Scots and Norse languages. We give the most commonly accepted meaning, but accept that some of these are disputed.

The UK is covered by 204 Ordnance Survey Landranger 1:50,000 scale maps. Maps numbered 1 to 86 cover Scotland but for the highest mountains (Munros) only 23 maps are required. The name given roughly describes the area covered by the map.

A description of the characteristics of the mountain including any hazards of which you should be aware.

  Description
Situated approx 3km west of Tyndrum, Meall Odhar is overshadowed by Ben Lui and other high surrounding hills.

Whilst it has rounded slopes to the W, S and E, Meall Odhar presents a craggy face N to Glen Lochy.

Forestry on all sides necessitates identifying a suitable fire-break by which to ascend.

 
General Considerations
 Temperature decreases by 1degree C for every 100m of ascent.
 Wind usually increases with altitude.
 Visibility can change markedly with cloud level.
 River/Stream levels can increase markedly in one day.

After ascending Ben Lui and Beinn a Chleibh in magnificent weather I had enough in the tank to take in Graham Meall Odhar it`s on the way back to Dalrigh car park. After passing the green mining sheds for 1km, look left to see a farmer's steel gate. Take this then up to a broken wooden gate where you see a fire break that allows easy access to Meall Odhar. It's steep going after clearing the fire break with rocky tussocky ground all the way up. The summit is not the peak you see right in front of you but off to the left where you have a tremendous view of the scooped out Coire of Beinn Chuirn (Corbett). Ben Lui is seen in outstanding fashion from here as is Beinn Dubhchraig and Ben Oss. All of the Crianlarich hills are in fine view with Ben More and Stob Binnein dominating that range. To the north Beinnn Odhar and Beinn Dorain are well seen. Ben Challum is in line too and looked superb with its snow capped tops. This Graham may not be well known but is a fantastic view point of hills you may know well.
